BCG Herbicide trials

This project continues previous trials for managing herbicide resistant ryegrass. Long-term crop rotations in combinations of herbicide usage and alternative strategies such as chaff carts, will be investigated over three years. This work is being undertaken in co-operation with Hart (SA).

The resistant ryegrass site is located on Ian McClelland’s property near Culgoa.

Trials 2008

Trial name:

Rotation trial (RR1)

Aim:

To investigate whether it is possible to reduce ryegrass numbers on a paddock with known resistance without relying on in-crop grass selectives herbicides.

Treatments:

Year 1 - Lentils, medic, oaten hay (sown to whole block – not replicated)

Year 2 - Wheat (replicated)

Year 3 - Barley (replicated)

Chemicals used:

Year 1 Lentils – Roundup 1.5L/ha (pre-sow), simazine 0.6L/ha + Lexone 130g/ha PSPE#; gramoxone 1L/ha crop top
Medic – Roundup 1.5L/ha early October, gramoxone if regrowth
Hay – Roundup 1.5L/ha pre-sow, diuron 1.2L/ha PSPE

Years
2 & 3

1. Control (no herbicides)
2. TriflurX 1.5L/ha IBS*
3. TriflurX 3.0L/ha IBS
4. TriflurX 1.5L/ha IBS + chaff cart at harvest
5. Chaff cart

Plots sprayed with herbicide resistance boom and sown using the Avon Richardson seeder with presswheels (no-till).
# PSPE = Post-sowing pre-emergent
* IBS = Incorporated by sowing

Trial name:

Trifluralin and mixes with inter-row sowing (RR2)

Aim:

To investigate whether trifluralin and mixes can be used with a high degree of crop safety and good rye control with no-till inter-row sowing.

Treatments:

2006 Yitpi wheat sown with Walpeup seeder (12-inch spacings), TriflurX 1.6L/ha IBS
2007 Wyalkatchem wheat sown with Walpeup seeder per inter-row / slashed / burnt stubble
2008 SloopVic barley sown using the Avon Richardson seeder

2008 treatments:

1. TriflurX 2L/ha IBS
2. TriflurX 2L/ha + AvadexX 1.6L/ha IBS
3. TriflurX 2L/ha + AvadexX 1.6L/ha + Dual Gold 0.5L/ha IBS
4. TriflurX 3L/ha

Trial name:

Dry and wet sowing pre-emergent herbicides (RR3)

Aim:

To compare the effectiveness of pre-emergent herbicides for the control of ryegrass under different sowing conditions.

Treatments:

1. Control
2. TriflurX (1.5L/ha IBS)
3. TriflurX (3.0L/ha IBS)
4. TriflurX (1.5L/ha) + Dual Gold (0.5L/ha) IBS
5. TriflurX (1.5L/ha) + Avadex Xtra (1.6L/ha) + Dual Gold (0.5L/ha) IBS
6. TriflurX (1.5L/ha) + Avadex Xtra (1.6L/ha) IBS
7. TriflurX (1.5L/ha) + Lexone (180g/ha) IBS
8. BAY191 (166g/ha) IBS
9. Boxergold 2.5L/ha IBS
