Government funding extends BCG programs

The Bracks Government will provide funding for several programs run for farmers by the Birchip Cropping Group (BCG), the Agriculture Minister, Bob Cameron, announced today at the opening of BCG’s 2006 Expo.

Mr Cameron said the Government would provide $50,000 towards a range of initiatives run by the group which support local farmers and communities.

“BCG has a history of implementing innovative and interesting projects across a range of social, agronomic and financial areas,” he said.

Initiatives that will benefit from the funding include:

  • Over the Fence – a series of communication pieces by farmers for farmers that focus on topical issues and farming techniques
  • Regional Yield Prophet Forecasts – a monthly summary of the most important forecasting models and tools that predict rainfall and crop yields
  • Regional Forums with Service Providers – a series of regional breakfast forums to provide interaction with service providers
  • Risk Management Training Workshops – exploring options for developing alternate farm or off farm income

“When I visited Birchip in May I was impressed by a presentation given by BCG on several projects they had run in past 12 months that were supported by the Bracks Government. This new funding will help continue those programs,” Mr Cameron said.

“Importantly, the work done by BCG helps people develop leadership skills in farming practice, business and the community, improves access to local services, strengthens community relationships and increases understanding about regional issues, resources and networks.”
