Successful day for BCG

BCG presented results from over ten major agronomic trials to 150 BCG members at the Birchip Community Leisure Centre last Friday. This was the first opportunity BCG members had to hear directly the results from trial work conducted in 2008.

Results from fungicide, barley agronomy, risk management, herbicide, moisture conservation, farming systems, nitrogen timing, long-term phosphorus, fluid phosphorus and farmer strip trials were discussed and debated during the day. Much of the work has direct implications for farmer decisions this coming season and presenters addressed how farmers could incorporate some of the key findings into their businesses.

BCG Chairman Ian McClelland opened the day announcing the 2009 theme “From Surviving to Thriving” – the BCG ethos for the rest of the year. He said “In 2009 BCG will aim to support all farm decisions enabling businesses to capture every opportunity to move from survival mode to thriving”.

Key work that sparked a lot of interest from the farmer audience was a potential new phosphorus soil test called DGT. So far in the research phase this test is more accurately predicting soil responses from the application of phosphorus fertiliser. If this new test through further validation proves more accurate than currently available phosphorus soil tests, it could mean that in the future farmers will be able to more accurately and cost effectively use phosphorus fertiliser in their farming systems.

Farmer feedback from the day was very positive with farmers highly regarding Trials Review Day as a must attend event. Not only did the day provide valuable information for farmers but it was a great social day enjoyed by all.
