2020 Vision study tour

Our 2020 Vision tours and events have been highly successful at bringing together young people who live and work in the agricultural industry to provide encouragement, motivation, support and further education in a fun and social environment.

And this year we have support from GRDC to run another of our popular study tours.

Ballarat and Melbourne including:

  • Crop walk
  • Goldacres
  • Winery tour 
  • Bureau of Meteorology Forecasting Centre
  • Barrett Burston Malt House and/or malt testing laboratory
  • Port of Melbourne
  • VFF Annual Grains Industry Dinner
  • Parliament House
Cost: $322 (approx.) for three days and nights (the total cost has been subsidised by GRDC)

Wednesday 22 July

Stop 1: Meeting up with the young Southern Farming Systems group in the Ballarat region to join a crop walk with DPI Ballarat. The purpose of this is to speak with local grain growers about their innovative ideas and techniques such as proximal crop sensors, wider row spacing and biomass crops. Time spent: 2.5 hours

Stop 2: Touring the Goldacres manufacturing plant in Ballarat to see the latest spraying technology and a preview of new technologies being developed. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss with designers, facilitating an understanding of practical applications and technology feasibility. Time spent: 2 hours

LUNCH

Stop 3: Arrive at Eastern Peake Winery (Coghills Creek) to speak with a viticulturist. This will give participants an opportunity to share knowledge and experiences with someone who works in a different area of agriculture. Dinner included. Time spent: 4.5 hours

BREAKFAST

TRAVEL TO MELBOURNE

Stop 4: Tour of the Bureau of Meteorology Forecasting Centre. This will provide participants with a better understanding of the tools used to forecast weather and climate and manage risk in variability and change, better equipping them to face the challenges and opportunities brought about by climate variability and change in the grains industry. Time spent: 2 hours

Stop 5: Tour of Barrett Burston Malt House and/or Malt testing laboratory. Participants will see how their barley product is processed. This provides young grain farmers with an understanding of why specifications for barley breeding and end user requirements are put in place. This understanding will ensure that the best varieties and techniques will be utilised in the future to provide the best produce possible. Time spent: 2 hours

LUNCH

Stop 6: Tour of the Port of Melbourne including a trip to the Port Education Centre. This gives participants an insight into the logistics, freight, storage and handling issues involved in the grains industry, helping them to understand the supply/demand issues relating to grain production. Time spent 3.5 hours

Stop 7: VFF Annual Grains Industry Dinner with YAPS (Young Agribusiness Professionals), industry members and grains councillors. Networking with other farming groups especially those outside Victoria is a fantastic way to gather ideas, knowledge and experiences and develop future grain industry leaders.

BREAKFAST

Stop 8: Tour of Parliament House with ministerial staff and possibly the Agricultural Minister. This tour will allow participants to learn the process of how decisions affecting them are made. This understanding will allow participants to know how to more effectively contribute to government and industry decision making. Southern Farming Systems detach from tour to return home.
