Ground cover - a key message

The BCG Soil Biology and Organic Matter workshops in Boort on July 21 and St Arnaud on July 28 were well attended. 30 farmers and advisors joined the soil health discussion led by experts Helen Hayden, Pauline Mele and Catherine Botta. Both workshops were a great opportunity for attendees to find out how best to increase, maintain and protect soil biology and organic carbon in their soils.

One of the key message of the workshops was to increase ground cover. Ground cover promotes organic matter by reducing soil temperature, evaporation rates and soil erosion.

One participant commented: “I now have a better understanding of the relationship between organic matter and ground cover. The workshop has shown me how I can change my practices to improve the health of my soil, which in the end, will benefit my bottom line.”

These workshops are part of the Healthy Soils for Sustainable Farms Project. BCG has conducted several different Healthy Soils workshops. Possessing healthy soils is necessary to increase water infiltration and maintain profitable and sustainable agriculture.
