BCG Native Pasture Cropping Field Day
Native pasture cropping is a novel farming system BCG is trialling where winter cereal crops are sown directly into summer active native pastures. On Friday 9 April BCG is running a pasture cropping field day at their Hopetoun trial site to demonstrate the sowing of crop and native pasture seed using pasture cropping principles. This will include an explanation on how the system works and the necessary steps required for successful native pasture management and crop sowing.
Colin Seis, a pasture cropping pioneer, will explain how the combination of cropping and grazing into one land management system can provide cost, grazing, soil health and biodiversity benefits.
BCG Project Officer Jonathan Starks commented: “Pasture cropping may provide many benefits to our farming systems. In the future we hope to be able to capitalise on this system’s ability to exploit the different growing phases of annual crops and perennial grasses.”
Machinery required for pasture cropping will be on display with an explanation of the modifications and conversions that can be made to existing machines.
The day will run from 9:00am to 12.00pm at the BCG trial site 13km south-east of Hopetoun. Morning tea and a BBQ lunch will be provided. Please RSVP by Tuesday 6 April by calling the BCG office on (03) 5492 2787. There will be a $20 charge for non-BCG members.
Directions: From Hopetoun, travel south along the Henty Highway for 8km, turn left into the Goyura East School Bus Road and travel another 8km. Look out for BCG signs on the north side of the road.
This project is supported through funding from the Australian Government’s Caring for our Country.
