BCG has finalised the 2010 Main Field Day Site

BCG’s 2010 Main Site will be hosted by Peter and Marg Shirley on their property at Warne, 40kms east of Birchip on the Calder Highway. Cereal, pulse and oilseed varieties will be tested at the site with other trials to be finalised by the BCG General Advisory committee in mid February. Farmers and industry are invited to attend the Main Field Day at this site scheduled for Thursday 9 September 2010.

At Hopetoun, BCG will enter the second year of the Water Use Efficiency project, supported by GRDC. The project has trials established on both ‘heavy’ and ‘light’ soils. The first trial looks at how paddock surface conditions eg. retained stubble, bare soil, cultivated earth, weeds etc. affect water storage during summer, water use efficiency and yield of subsequent crops. The second trial assesses how different break crops affect water-use-efficiency, subsequent crop yields and the costs and benefits of break crops across rotations.

BCG’s research program has been established to address topical and relevant issues relating to farmers in the Wimmera Mallee. BCG looks forward to discussing the progress of all trials at our field days and crop walks throughout the year.
