Wimmera Mallee trial results to be released

BCG will present results and key findings from 2009 trials to its members on the 19 February at the Birchip Community Leisure Centre.

Crown Rot, the latest on phosphorus testing, grazing cereals, a new imi-tolerant barley option, disc seeding and a wheat variety choice discussion session will be some of the hot topics discussed at BCG’s Members Only Trials Review Day.

Dr. Hugh Beckie, Canada's foremost authority on the subject of herbicide resistant weeds will be the key note speaker at this year’s event providing an international perspective on herbicide resistance. Based at Agriculture Canada in Saskatoon, Hugh has led some of the worlds most innovative research into the management of weed resistance in cropping systems. His presentation will be directed at what strategies Wimmera Mallee farmers can adopt to curb the development of resistance.

Another key feature of the day will be a discussion session on wheat varieties. There has been much conjecture about the performance of various wheat varieties over the past 12 months particularly with a period of heat stress followed by a wet harvest. The panel of wheat breeders, local agronomists, BCG staff and wheat researchers, will look at the facts and discuss what varieties will be grown 2010.

The day will also feature presentations by BCG’s Fiona Best, Simon Craig and Claire Browne, CSIRO’s Dr James Hunt, Melbourne University Dr Michael Walsh and JS& A’s Dr Kate Burke.

This annual event is a great opportunity for farmers, researchers and industry representatives to plan and discuss important strategies for the season ahead. Participants are encouraged to ask questions, debate, challenge and learn from the trial results presented. Each year the BCG works hard to deliver local research results for the benefit of our rural and farming communities and it is with much satisfaction that the results are shared.

Discussions will commence at 9.30am sharp with registration starting at 9am at the Birchip Community Leisure Centre on Friday 19 February. There will be a $10 charge to cover the cost of catering. This event is for BCG members only. Participants are encouraged to become BCG members before 19 February.
