BCG wins Banksia Award
The Birchip Cropping Group has won the 2007 Banksia Award in the ‘Land and Biodiversity’ category for the ‘Diversity in a Piped System Project’. The Banksia Awards, established in 1989 and regarded as Australia’s most prestigious environmental awards, recognise and reward leaders in environmental excellence and sustainability.
“It is a great honour for BCG to be recognised for the research and for the commitment of the farming community to the environment” said Jonathan Starks, project officer, on accepting the award sponsored by Double A in Sydney last Friday. It was through the foresight and innovation of farmers that the concept of ‘ponds for wildlife’ was created as a means of maintaining biodiversity on farms after the introduction of the pipeline.
“We thank the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation, CSIRO, Wimmera, North Central and Mallee CMAs and GWM Water and most importantly the 36 farms who hosted research sites” said Mr Starks.
