Reduce, reuse and recycle!
Thirty women braved the cold weather and heavy rain to attend the second climate forum 'making changes at home’. The day, held at Danny's Rusty Nail in Warracknabeal, covered a variety of topics incuding sustainability in the home, recycling and waste managment and low water gardens.
Guest speaker La Vergne Lehmann, who hosts a regular sustainability segment on local ABC radio, provided numerous tips on how to save money and reduce your impact on the environment. She also demonstrated how to be resoureful with what you have at home by making a number of natural skin care products from items out of the kitchen pantry.
Cathy McNab, Regional Education Officer with Grampians Regional Waste Management Group, tested the ladies knowledge of what can and can't be recycled. Blowing away some of the myths surrounding recycling, Cathy showed what happens to the items that we put in the recycling bin and how they are often given a new life in the form of new products or packaging.
After a delicious lunch the group were treated to a discussion by Ted Brown, manager of Wimmera Native Nursery and host of G.W.M Water’s Sunday gardening program on 3WM local radio. Ted provided us with ideas on how to make our gardens water efficient and showed us some of the natives that are best suited to the area before talking about growing your own vegetables and the benefits of composting.
Further forums will be held on Tuesday 6 October in Woomelang on ‘Managing risk’ and Wednesday 28 October in Birchip on ‘Adapting to change'. For more information or to book into a forum please contact Jodie Odgers at BCG on 03 5492 2787.
