On Wednesday 21 July the Governor of Victoria, Professor David de Kretser, A.C.and Mrs de Kretser visited BCG. ‘We were pleased to be able to highlight the work BCG does addressing critical farm production issues and the role BCG plays in delivering relevant and timely information for decision making,’ said Alexandra Gartmann CEO of BCG.

A round table discussion focusing on the retention and attraction of young people in rural communities and the agricultural industry was hosted with the Governor and Mrs de Kretser. Shan Coffey from M&P Jolly, Tara Sharpe from WHK and past BCG staff member Alexandra Liston joined BCG staff and committee and Buloke Shire Mayor Leo Tellerfson for the half hour roundtable. ‘Young people are vital for the future of our region and our communities,’ said Ms Gartmann. ‘If BCG can a play a role in attracting young professionals from a range of backgrounds and experiences to work and involve themselves in our community then our communities and the agricultural industry will be stronger and more prosperous as a result.’

In his response the Governor commented on the fact that interacting with all generations and knowing your neighbours was part and parcel of living in a country town: ‘Unfortunately in many city streets now, residents may not even know who lives next door, let alone know their name. It is evident that most people in small communities know each other and genuinely care for each other.’

Ms Gartmann added ‘We hope the Governor and Mrs de Kretser now have a deeper understanding of the broader role BCG plays in researching and seeking solutions for social, environmental and climate issues in addition to our core farm production work.’
