Sensing success: the latest in crop management

Spring time is the business end of the growing season when timely agronomic decisions can make a healthy difference. BCG is hosting a Soil 2 Grain workshop in Rupanyup on Tuesday 3 August exploring the latest results, techniques and guidelines on canopy and disease management in cereal and canola crops.

Nick Poole of Foundation for Arable Research New Zealand and project coordinator will be presenting valuable information which will assist farmers in making the major decisions that they will face in the coming weeks on fungicide and nitrogen management.

Nick said: “The sessions will explore the latest management tools such as Yield Profit and crop sensors. This will provide a greater insight into crop canopy status so better decisions can be made with reduced risks in a variable climate.”

Nick said: “It’s important that farmers have a clear strategy in place now to manage fungicide and nitrogen application.

“We have two seasons of results under our belts now looking at the use of crop sensors and the relationship to canopy structures which we can draw relevant conclusions about in-crop management.”

With the current showery condition and the recent sightings of stem and strip rust in a number of regions, disease management in 2010 will be essential. Simon Craig (BCG) and John Midwood (SFS) will be discussing both disease and nitrogen management and the 2010 seasonal forecast.

Simon Craigsaid: “Farmers have reported stripe rust in volunteer cereals and stem rust has been confirmed in areas around Boort and Bendigo, the workshop will refresh growers on how to tackle diseases which may arise including product selection, securing product and time of treatment.”

This second annual Soil 2 Grain workshop forms a series of other workshops, training events and meetings funded by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) as part of a national project investigating new technologies such as use of crop sensors for nitrogen management.

The workshop is on Tuesday 3 August 2010, from 10.30 am – 3.30 pm at the Rupanyup Commercial Hotel. Cost: BCG members free, non members $30. Lunch will be provided. For more information or to RSVP please call BCG on (03) 5392 2787 or info@bcg.org.au.
