Maximising opportunities from the new superannuation laws

On Wednesday 18 April 2007, BCG held a Superannuation Forum in conjunction with Noel Meney from Poole & Associates, Swan Hill, and Joe Cadzow from Genesys Wealth Advisors, Swan Hill. The Forum was funded by the Make it Happen in Provincial Victoria campaign. Over 60 people came to the Birchip Leisure Centre to hear what the new superannuation rules (coming into effect from the 1July this year) mean for farmers and farm businesses.

"This event offered a fantastic opportunity for farmers to get up to date with the new superannuation laws" said Ingrid Taylor, BCG Extension Officer.

Some of the key topics discussed at the forum included the benefits of holding assets in a self-managed super fund, the savings possible from consolidating super funds, how to maximise the tax-free benefits of a super fund and the benefits under the new super laws of entering the Pension Phase of a superannuation fund.

As always, a strong emphasis was placed on ensuring participants seek professional advice before making any decisions regarding their business. It is important to note that each individual's business structure and situation is different and no broad stroke rules apply from the superannuation changes.
