BCG charity paddock supports local students

A $7000 donation from Birchip Cropping Group (BCG) will ensure Birchip P-12 School’s homework club initiative will continue.

At the school’s presentation evening on December 17, BCG chief executive officer David Chamberlin said his organisation was delighted to be able to support local students.

Birchip P-12 School Principal John Richmond said the homework club was established to support students who may not always have access to the help and resources they need to reach their potential.

Operating three nights a week, with a teacher in charge, the homework club is for students from Years 5-12.

On Tuesdays the focus is literacy, on Wednesdays it is numeracy and on Thursday general needs can be addressed.

The donation to support the homework club was made possible thanks to BCG’s charity paddock which was established by BCG members and Board as a way to give back to the local communities.

Over the years, funds generated through crops grown in the charity paddock have been used to support students undertaking trades and agricultural tertiary studies.

Birchip farmer Andy Barber, who helps look after the charity paddock and its crops each year, said he was very excited that money from the initiative would help support the Birchip P-12 School homework club.

“We thought the Birchip P-12 School’s homework club was a fantastic idea to offer extra support for students to get help with homework, a tough subject, or just providing a good atmosphere and resources to encourage study,” he said.

“It’s rewarding to see the kids get an even better chance at the learning and education they need for their chosen career path.”

Accepting the donation on behalf of the school, Mr Richmond thanked BCG and the local families who contributed to the BCG charity paddock.

“I commend BCG and its members on their altruism and willingness to assist others less fortunate,” he said.

“I thank you all for your generosity and continued interest in the support of our school which continues to receive so much support from our community.”
