What happens after three La Niñas?

“What happens after three La Niñas.” That’s the topic Seasonal Risk Agronomist Dale Grey from Agriculture Victoria will discuss at BCG’s Trials Review Day on Friday 24th of February at the Birchip Leisure Centre. Register at bcg.org.au/events

“I’ll be discussing historically what has happened after three La Niñas in a row,” Dale says. “Three La Niñas is not common, in fact there is no history of four in a row. It would be unprecedent but that’s not to say it can’t happen.”

Dale will also discuss what caused last year’s deluge of wet weather: “Three out of the four climate drivers were in the wet phase in spring. In addition, we also had record warm ocean temperatures to the north of us. By definition, if you have record warm ocean temperatures, you have record evaporation and if you get the right weather triggers to draw the moisture down, you get record rainfall which is exactly what we saw,” Dale explains.

Dale will also give a live demonstration of the Bureau of Meteorology’s new Forewarned is Forearmed climate forecast pages which he believes “are more illuminating than ever before”. The tools give users extra information such as how wet, dry, hot or cold the coming months could be. “They will help inform farmers’ decisions as they’re designed to predict extremes,” Dale said.
