Attendees at the BCG Expo dinner next week will be supporting Birchip P-12 School students to build a Cambodian school.
Birchip P-12 School students and staff have signed up as part of an Asia Pacific Youth Foundation (APYF) initiative working to make a difference in the lives of children, families and communities trapped in the poverty cycle.
They are spending the year raising money for building materials and in December will head to Cambodia where they will work with APYF volunteers and the local community to build a school.
To help raise money for the project the twelve students and three teachers taking part in the project, with support from the whole school community, will organise and present a three-course cocktail style meal at the annual BCG Expo dinner.
Profits raised from the dinner will go towards buying materials for the Cambodian school.
Birchip P-12 School principal John Richmond said all the money raised for the project is going towards building materials, with students and staff self-funding all flights and accommodation.
“The school has always tried to instill our students with a social conscience,” he said.
The students who are in years 10, 11 and 12, along with teachers Russell Christie, Catherine Bijker and Kristy Knights, will spend nine days in Cambodia building the school.
For the Year 12s involved it is an alternative to the traditional ‘schoolies’ celebrations held after exams.
Mr Richmond said the experience would expose the students to a completely different lifestyle and provide them with the opportunity to assist those less fortunate than themselves.
The BCG Future Farmers Expo is at the Birchip P-12 School from 11am on July 6. The day features information sessions about farm business management, new technology and climate, as well as exhibits by highly regarded agribusinesses.
Along with a quality dinner, which will be prepared under the direction of skilled food technology teacher Kristy Knights, the School’s parents committee will provide a barbecue lunch for Expo attendees.
The BCG Expo dinner will be held at Birchip P-12 School from 6pm on July 6 (following the BCG Future Farmers Expo). Tickets are $50 (drinks included) and can be purchased by phoning BCG on (03) 5492 2787 or online at www.bcg.org.au.
Donations to the project can also be made directly to Birchip P-12 School. Please contact John Richmond on 0417 106 033 for banking details.
