Soil amelioration hot topic at Mitiamo

Farmers and advisers attended BCG’s Mitiamo Crop Walk recently. The event focussed on fodder and pulses, with BCG’s soil amelioration pulse performance trials at the site generating much interest.

BCG’s Senior Research Manager James Murray said: “Farmers are always interested in how they can improve their soil so we knew our work trialling pulse performance in response to soil amelioration strategies at Mitiamo would draw a crowd. We explained the strategies being tested at the site, these include deep ripping, sub-soil gypsum applications and Calciprill, and answered many questions!”

“We also discussed our vetch and oaten hay variety trials, sowing date and sowing rate trial, hay nutrition management, broadleaf weed management in vetch and lentils and field pea variety and sowing date trials,” explained James. “It was great to be out in the field talking with growers and advisers in this area. We look forward to coming back.”

The BCG’s Mitiamo trial site is approximately three kilometres west of Mitiamo on the Bendigo-Pyramid Road. If you would like more information call the BCG office on (03) 5492 2787.
