Birchip Cropping Group (BCG) has proudly awarded Life Membership to two outstanding contributors, Trevor “Waffle” Grogan and Dr Tony Gregson AM, in recognition of their extraordinary service, leadership and commitment to farmer driven research.
The honours were presented at BCG’s 2026 Trials Review Day on February 20, surrounded by farmers, researchers and staff, a fitting setting to acknowledge two individuals who have helped shape the organisation from its earliest days.
Trevor Grogan, known locally as “Waffle” was recognised for his foundational role in the establishment and growth of BCG and his unwavering support for more than three decades.
A highly respected local farmer, Mr Grogan played a critical role in getting BCG off the ground when, in 1993, he offered his own farm to host research trials following a now legendary visit to the Hart Field Site in South Australia.
Sixteen hectares were opened up, allowing canola and lentils to be demonstrated in the southern Mallee for the first time. More than 500 people attended that inaugural field day, confirming the demand for locally relevant, farmer-led research.
Who would have thought that more than 30 years later, that early decision would lead to a group with 28 passionate staff, trials across more than 50 locations, and a footprint right across north-west Victoria?
Mr Grogan again hosted trials in 1994, helping BCG build early momentum and confidence. Since then, his support has remained constant – providing paddocks, seed, feedback, ideas and encouragement, and attending almost every major BCG event over the years.
In 2026, he will again host his fourth BCG Main Field Day site in September.
BCG Board Chair John Ferrier said ‘Waffle’s’ willingness to say “yes” even when the idea was unproven was instrumental in creating what BCG has become today.
BCG also awarded a life membership to Dr Tony Gregson AM, recognising his immense contribution to agricultural science, governance and his long standing service to the organisation.
A Wimmera grain grower and globally respected scientist, Tony holds Bachelor of Science (Hons), PhD and Doctor of Science degrees from the University of Melbourne and has held academic and research positions at leading institutions including Oxford University and the University of North Carolina.
His career includes senior governance roles with CSIRO, the Grains Research and Development Corporation, CIMMYT, the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute and the CGIAR Alliance, among many others. In 2009, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for service to agricultural science and research.
Despite his global influence, Tony has remained deeply connected to local farming communities. He has been a proud supporter of BCG since its inception and has served on the BCG Research Committee for more than 20 years.
Known for his ability to challenge thinking while championing practical, evidence–based research, Tony has played a vital role in shaping BCG’s purpose and direction.
BCG acknowledged not only Dr Gregson’s professional achievements, but also his long-standing commitment to community service through Rotary, his personal resilience, and the ongoing involvement of his family in the local community. Tony Gregson has given BCG wisdom, challenge, credibility, and support. His influence is deeply embedded in who we are as an organisation.
“These Life Memberships recognise two very different journeys, but the same unwavering belief in BCG and what it stands for,” John Ferrier said, BCG Chair.
Trevor Grogan and Dr Tony Gregson AM have both left an indelible mark on this organisation.
