The men at BCG proved they could grow more than crops this month when, with varying success, they grew and cultivated moustaches to raise awareness and funds for men’s health.
During November, the male members of the BCG Movember team allowed their facial hair to flourish and, with the support of their non-mo-growing colleagues, worked on raising money to support the Australia-wide Movember campaign.
The moustache-growers, led by team captain Chris Cook, included Cameron Taylor, James Murray and Jake Gleeson. They were also supported by visiting consultants Ramesha Shimoga and Chengappa Chottera who have been spending time in Birchip installing new specialised computer software at BCG.
Meanwhile the rest of the BCG team got on board with the initiative, by donating funds, joining fundraising activities and taking part in a celebratory breakfast held on November 30.
Together, with support from other donors including the local Landmark staff who joined BCG for the breakfast, the team have raised $791.
BCG Movember team captain Chris Cook said he expected this figure to increase over the next few days as online donations came in.
“The aim of Movember isn’t about who can grow facial hair,” he said.
“Its purpose is to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and male mental health.”
Mr Cook said the charity suited BCG very well, particularly after two droughts and a subsequent focus on the health and wellbeing farmers and farming communities.
“This has also led to us partnering the National Centre for Farmer Health on a project measuring the impact of exposure to farm chemicals this year,” Mr Cook said.
