Parents’ retreat back at the Main Field Day

Parents of young children will be able to catch a moment of peace and quiet at this years’ BCG Main Field Day thanks to the support of long-term BCG partner Rural Bank. For the second year, a parents’ retreat at the BCG Main Field Day will offer parents access to facilities for nappy changing, breast feeding and kids’ activities.

Greg Kuchel. Rural Bank Regional Manager Agribusiness Wimmera and Mallee says that attending agricultural events forms an important form of professional development for all members of a farming business.

“More often than not, farming is a family operation, and it’s important that all members of a family-farming business are able to attend, engage with the research and researchers and keep abreast of new developments in the industry”.

“As an industry, agriculture needs to get better at ensuring the ongoing needs of the entire farming family are catered for, and Rural Bank is pleased to be supporting this novel approach at the BCG Main Field Day on 11 September.”

Mr Kuchel is keen to see young parents use these facilities. “The idea is for the whole family to be able to come along. Having a young family shouldn’t prevent you from participating in important learning and development opportunities like the BCG Main Field Day,” he says.

BCG Innovations, Projects and Partners Lead Phillip Guthrie says that it’s becoming more common for both parents to have active roles in the family farm, in the paddock as well as strategic and finance roles.

“We’re hoping to make it easier for farming families with young children to stay at the event longer, and for both parents to get out and about and talk to researchers about trials and trial results and what they may mean for their farming business.

“Needless to say, the parents’ retreat is open to both mums and dads – we had a few fathers using the facility last year and are expecting that number to grow this year as word gets around.”
