The BCG Surviving to Thriving Main Field Day held Thursday 10 September on the property of Chris and Janice Kelly was a huge success.

Approximately 500 farmers and industry representatives came to be part of what has become one of the regions premier agricultural events. Attendees started the day in the large soil pit to understand the soil’s key characteristics such as structure, nutrient status and water holding capacity. They then joined one of five different trial tour options. Each individually designed tour took a different path around the field day site visiting various trials, where BCG staff, guest presenters and farmers discussed research results including those of grazing cereals, IMI-tolerant varieties, row spacing and alternate nutrition.

BCG Extension Manager, Fiona Best led a separate tour designed specially for school students studying agriculture. The students were able to gain a sound understanding of GM canola, alternate nutrition, and wheat and barley varieties available to farmers in the region.

Michael and Dennis O’Brien, two farmers from Walgett had participants on the edge of their seats in the afternoon discussion session. The Walgett farmers spoke bravely about the current state of agriculture and where it is heading, inspiring attendees to take on the challenges facing agriculture now and in the future.

One farmer commented: “I really enjoyed the O’Brien brothers. To hear about their experiences in such a frank, honest and open way was refreshing. It’s made me think more about my own position and how I can make the most out of every opportunity and hopefully create some opportunities of my own.”

Participants then chose to hear the latest developments in either weedIT, the new sensor which is hoped to save farmers thousands on spraying cost or pulse varieties designed specially for the region. Afterwards, attendees came together to discuss their learnings, share ideas and enjoy the evening with complimentary drinks provided by BCG diamond level sponsors.
