Your crop has been grown and harvested on-time, all with a good result, the easy part some would argue, as opposed to the challenge of grain storage, logistics and marketing.
BCG project manager Louisa Ferrier recently met with Agfarm’s account manager Tim Hogarth in the lead up to the 2017 harvest to discuss what grain marketing strategies and processes growers can put into place this season.
There was plenty to discuss with the bumper 2016 season and low prices, especially as many growers have held grain over in the hope of a price rise. As the 2017 harvest approaches, Wimmera crops are looking excellent and most of the Mallee will produce good yields, which may prove to be a challenge in terms of storage and prices.
Mr Hogarth suggested holding off on selling grain until closer to harvest, that way the yields of other grain growing areas will be known and may lead to a price increase.
“Wait until harvest before you make too many sales,” Mr Hogarth advised.
Mr Hogarth also advised to make sure that grain storage is cleaned out properly from the previous crop.
“Have a plan for pest control. If your silo isn’t sealed there is no point in fumigating” he said.
