GRDC has recently approved a three-year investment, led by the University of Adelaide, to undertake farmer-driven research into the management of barley grass.
BCG is leading the Victorian Mallee component and is inviting growers to a meeting on Friday 22 March at Sea Lake Football Club from 8.30am to direct the future of this research and ensure it is applied and meets the needs of farmers.
One of Australia’s leading weeds researchers, Dr Gurjeet Gill, will be leading the meeting aimed at providing growers with the opportunity to identify four management strategies and rotations to be investigated over the three years of study.
Once research sites have been identified, BCG will collect barley grass seeds to determine seed dormancy and herbicide resistance prior to undertaking any management strategies.
Throughout the three years of research, the sites will be used to collect data on crop performance (density and yield) and barley grass plant density and panicle density as well as seed production each year.
A spring crop walk will be held at the research site annually to highlight the impact of the difference management practices on barley grass.
Six growers in the Mallee will be offered a free test of herbicide resistance and seed dormancy behaviour in the second and third years of the project.
At the end of the third-year, data will be used to develop management case studies for the most effective barley grass control strategy.
This is a fantastic opportunity to drive the research priorities on the management of barley grass. For more information and to RSVP, please phone the BCG office on 03 5492 2787.
