Meet the team: Vin Delahunty

Views

Vin Delahunty is moving his career to the country to commence a role with BCG after establishing his career at agricultural organisations in Melbourne. Vin explains what he is looking forward to in the coming year.

I grew up on a farm at Murtoa and have spent my working life in agriculture. Agriculture offers so many employment opportunities other than farming. Most of my work time has been spent with member based industry organisations but I have some media and publications experience as well.

Over my lifetime I have worked in the livestock, farm machinery and dairy sectors, but not grains. Birchip offered me an opportunity to work directly in the grains industry and to do that with an established, credible and respected organisation like BCG was hugely attractive.

What is your role at BCG?

It’s an operations role but the title includes engagement, business and corporate services. My focus is on helping BCG meet the challenges of the current operating environment. Essentially, I am leading a team that supports the very capable research and extension teams to focus on the work they do.

What are you looking forward to in the year ahead?

Rain! Starting with an early season break. On a personal level I am looking forward to better understanding the grains industry so I can help BCG strengthen its role and reputation.

I am also learning about the many projects that keep the BCG team busy so watching them through the year will be interesting.

Professionally I am looking forward to meeting the BCG members.

In footy terms, I am looking forward to a resurgent Essendon, and locally, the mighty Minyip-Murtoa Burra’s winning the flag.

What do you enjoy about working at BCG?

The staff are friendly and supportive. It has been an especially busy time for the staff with the harvest and end of season requirements plus an amazing number of project funding applications prepared and submitted. Despite these pressures, I have been impressed with their collegiate approach in supporting each other.

Vin’s quotes to live by:

I often quoted ‘Always be good to the gatekeeper’ as a dad lesson for the kids. Being respectful and courteous to others is important AND sometimes the ‘gatekeeper’ might be able to help in some way.

Growing up, the quote I remember most from mum was ‘Women weren’t put on this earth to look after men!’
