So far this storage season, it would appear grain insects have been active, with growers calling BCG to ask for advice on what to do.
Unfortunately many problems have been discovered during sowing – when it is too late.
Peter Botta, DPI grain storage expert, will present two sessions at this year’s BCG ‘From Surviving to Thriving’ Grains Research Expo focusing particularly on issues associated with grain storage and how to do it properly and with confidence.
Mr Botta will address key issues such as controlling existing insect infestations in unsealed storage, phosphine resistance, dichlorvos resistance and chemical withholding periods as well as the success of various storage systems.
Mr Botta said every grower has heard phosphine resistance is a big issue for the grains industry.
“Perhaps because this has been talked about for a number of years people have become complacent, however if there was ever a time to take notice it is now,” he said.
“Currently there are Flat Grain Beetles in both New South Wales and Queensland that may not be controlled by phosphine in sealed storages. The resistance we have been worried about and never wanted is here.”
In thinking about the future of the grains industry and farmers’ ability to effectively manage their on-farm storage system, Mr Botta said having good quality gas-tight silos, aeration and very good grain hygiene was the basis for success.
“There are other ways to store grain, and in many cases these will enable you to do what you wish, however thinking and planning a system that will work now and into the future is important,” he said.
