Stubble troubles investigated at BCG crop tour

Views

High stubble loads presented logistical challenges for many Mallee farmers this sowing. View what worked well, and where improvements can be made at the BCG Northern Mallee Stubble Tour, 26 July.

BCG researcher Claire Browne will facilitate the event, presenting research conducted by the GRDC ‘Managing profitable farming systems with retained stubble in Victoria and Tasmania’ project over the past four years.

“The day provides the perfect opportunity for growers to investigate different stubble management tools currently being used and trialed by local growers, especially given the significant stubble loads from the 2016 season,” she says.

“Through the GRDC stubble initiative, we’ve collated and analysed a lot of available information and now we’re able to start sharing all the knowledge we’ve gained with growers.”

The day will begin at 12.30pm with a BBQ lunch and will visit two farms and a trial site in the Kooloonong area. The half day tour will start at Alistair and Gordon Murdoch’s property and conclude at 5pm.

Participants will see the impact of stripper and draper fronts on lentil emergence, plus the stubble handing capabilities of both disc and tyne seeders.

The trial site visit includes research currently being conducted on the efficacy of trace elements through a liquid seeder delivery system and increasing the performance of pulses and barley on sandy soils.

This is a free event with a BBQ lunch provided. For catering purposes, please RSVP by phoning BCG on (03) 5492 2787. The event commences at 200 Murdoch Rd, Kooloonong.
