180 farmers from across the region attended the BCG Trials Review Day on Monday 17 February, in Birchip, hearing the latest research outcomes from 2007 BCG trials. A line up of top speakers including Ron Storey, David Cornish, Brooke White, Kate McCormick, James Jess, Peter McIntosh, Ben Jones, Rob Wheeler and Nigel McGuckian, presented some fantastic information for farmers to take into the 2008 cropping season.
Fiona Best, BCG Extension Coordinator, who facilitated the day, said “The day really provided the first opportunity for the year for farmers to come together, discuss trial results and kick start discussion regarding agronomic strategies for the coming season”.
“Independent information about fertiliser inputs, marketing strategies, summer weed management as well as the latest information on new variety releases are elements of the day that that farmers highly value,” Fiona said. “BCG’s role in facilitating such discussion is very important, especially given the run of tough seasons since 2002”.
“These days are so important in getting the latest information and the discussion really helps support the decision making processes for the coming season. It is one of the best days on the BCG calendar”, said Corack farmer, Richard Reilly.
All attendees received a copy of the member’s only edition of the BCG Research Highlight booklet as well as a copy of the GRDC low risk farming guide 2008, two very valuable resources for farmers to make use of.
