Calling for expressions of interest: ag safety network

Birchip Cropping Group members are invited to join a free network to collaborate with industry partners on prevention-led approaches to health and safety. The new grower-to-grower network will be facilitated by agricultural communications service, ORM in partnership with Birchip Cropping Group, with funding provided by WorkSafe Victoria.

The call is out for Expressions of Interest from BCG members who feel strongly that more can be done to create safer farms, families and futures.

Participants in the S3F network will collaborate and receive support from specialists to make practical steps that accelerate the adoption of safer practices on their farm. In conjunction training and development will be available to increase the participants’ confidence in managing safety issues.

ORM and BCG will use their professional links to engage with industry partners and growers, to provide a platform for sharing knowledge and helping to make real on-farm changes to reduce the incidence of fatalities and injuries. Participants in the network will also benefit from flow on effects, including reduced stress and anxiety about managing safety issues and their employees will feel confident safety is a priority.

ORM Senior Agribusiness Consultant Jane Foster said the aim of the network is to see greater uptake of improved safety practices.

“We believe that the most important legacy we can all leave to future generations of farmers and their families, is a safer workplace,” Ms Foster said.

“The safety learning network supports us to lead a community-based approach to tackling the workplace safety challenges that exist on farms.”

S3F is one of two networks in Victoria that were launched in October as part of WorkSafe’s Safety Learning Network program, which aims to improve health and safety outcomes for agricultural businesses.

WorkSafe Executive Director of Health and Safety Narelle Beer said the program was a valuable opportunity to bring primary producers, industry leaders and experts together to develop initiatives that boost safety and productivity on farms.

“It’s about collaboration – working together on practical and tailored ways to improve safety on farms,” Dr Beer said.
