Aim: To compare the performance of existing and emerging barley varieties in the Wimmera.

Location: Nhill
Previous crop type: 2015 – wheat
Starting soil N (0-70cm): 101kg N/ha
GSR: 339mm (recorded at Nhill aerodrome)
Nov ‘15 – Oct ‘16 rainfall: 455mm
Sowing date: 16 May 2016
Fertiliser:

16 May 50kg/ha Granulock Supreme Z + Impact

22 June 100kg/ha urea

20 July 100kg/ha urea

Harvest date: 24 December 2016

^ Currently undergoing malting accreditation

  • Oxford and Urambie were the highest yielding varieties.
  • Agronomically similiar varieties Spartacus CL, Hindmarsh, Rosalind and La Trobe yielded the same.
  • Westminster, Hindmarsh (food) and Spartacus CL (undergoing malting accreditation) were the only varieties to achieve malt (or food) grade in the trial.
  • The protein was low despite sufficient nitrogen being applied for a yield potential of 5t/ha.
