BCG believes that young people are a key factor in achieving the organisation’s mission of improving the prosperity of farmers and rural communities. In 2009 as part of the Rural Cadetship program, BCG hosted George Barry of Culgoa.

George worked at BCG on several occasions throughout the year to complete the six week program which is part of the Victorian Government’s Moving Forward strategy. The program aims to keep young students from provincial Victoria connected to their local community, who are currently studying away from home.

George commented: “Undertaking the cadetship at BCG enabled me to get some hands-on experience in my area of interest as well as allow me to be close to home.” While at BCG George was involved in the delivery of the Grains Research Expo in July as well as the harvest program in November.

George Barry who is currently studying an Advanced Diploma of Agriculture at Longerenong College is one of 21 students who undertook the cadetship in the Buloke Shire.

Buloke Shire Economic Development Officer James Goldsmith commented: “The uptake of the program has been very successful in the area. Not only has it brought students back to their community but host businesses have enjoyed the extra hands. Students have also been able to gain valuable experience not to mention earn some money to help out with their studies.”

In 2009 the program was available to rural and regional students from provincial Victoria who were studying in locations away from home. In addition to payment for their work throughout the cadetship, participants will receive an additional financial contribution towards their educational, transport and living costs while studying.
