The National Variety Trials (NVT) program, established and managed by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), is the world’s largest independent grain crop variety evaluation initiative. This national program assesses both commercially available varieties and pre-commercial breeding lines across 10 grain crop species, providing independent data to support growers and agronomists in making informed variety selections.
The primary goal of NVT is to enhance the long-term profitability of Australian grain growers by delivering reliable, comparative insights into yield performance, grain quality, and disease resistance ratings of commercial grain varieties.
The information generated is accurate, consistent, independent, and locally relevant, ensuring timely support for varietal decision-making. Trials are conducted following district best practices, including optimal sowing dates, nutrition, and chemical applications. To ensure a fair comparison of genetic performance across different environments, trials are managed to eliminate constraints such as disease, weeds, and fertiliser limitations.
It is important to note that NVT trials are not designed as gross margin trials, agronomy trials, or to develop variety-specific management packages.
