WorkSafe Victoria recently visited BCG to conduct a safety audit on the BCG soil sampler.
The audit was initiated by an anonymous phone call to Worksafe with concerns that BCG was operating a machine with an unguarded auger.
The BCG soil sampler does not have an auger, unlike some other samplers. The BCG soil sampler also operates from a custom-built trailer, unlike other designs that are mounted on the rear of a utility.
BCG chose the soil sampler without the auger and chose a trailer over ute mounted options during a safety risk analysis. This process identified potential operator risks that are mitigated by the choice of machinery and equipment used for that task.
Apart from choosing a sampler without an auger and choosing a trailer mounted option, BCG manages operator risks through a schedule of operator training. This is supported by a standard operating procedure that was developed to reflect the safety issues identified in a risk assessment conducted on the soil sampler.
WorkSafe conducted a physical review of the soil sampler including a demonstration of how it is used by the operator. They very quickly announced they had no issues.
WorkSafe then reviewed the BCG safety systems and paperwork that supports the use of the soil sampler.
They provided positive feedback on the equipment, it’s safety operations and the supporting paperwork.
They were also very complimentary about the BCG approach to Work Health & Safety including: BCG has a dedicated WHS committee; the committee meets regularly and reports to its Board; the soil sampler has a standard operating procedure; a risk assessment had been conducted and we could produce a Job Safety Analysis.
They confirmed in writing that no further action is required by BCG.
Congratulations to the staff involved for such a thorough and professional commitment to a safe workplace.
