BCG’s main research site is moving to Beulah.
In keeping with the organisation’s commitment to move its main research site each season, BCG has selected a paddock 18km east of Birchip for the bulk of its trial work in 2014.
BCG trials coordinator Claire Browne said BCG had another big research program planned and the team was looking forward to working with paddock owner Martin Warren to deliver relevant research findings for farmers in the region.
“The reason we move our site each year is so we can test crop varieties, weed, pest and disease control strategies and ferliliser products on a range of soil types across the vast region BCG covers,” she said.
In the past BCG’s main site has been located at Birchip, Woomelang, Culgoa, Corack and, last year, was at Watchupga East.
This year’s main trial site is located on the Birchip-Rainbow Road, 18kms east of Beulah. The paddock was sown to wheat in 2013 and to lentils in 2012.
Soil samples from the paddock are currently being analysed ahead of the approaching sowing period.
The site is expected to host over a dozen research trials including crop variety comparisons, nutrition trials, weed management trials, stubble management and more.
The site will also host BCG’s Main Field Day on September 10.
