The anticipation that comes from having such healthy looking crops in Spring is exciting.
That anticipation is balanced with our experience telling us there is plenty that can happen between now and harvest. Last year reminded us of the value of fodder, and what about the livestock? So many important business decisions need to be made! An important one at the moment is about to cut hay or not.
It’s been a very busy time for the team at BCG. The Board has started the search for a new CEO. Rimfire Resources have been appointed to assist with this process. They are actively working to identify suitable candidates. As an interim measure, the Board approached Caroline Welsh to support the BCG Senior Management Team until the new CEO is in place. The Board is confident the existing management can keep the organisation running effectively through this interim period. Caroline will provide a link between the board and management team and BCG project partners.
The main focus for BCG is next Wednesday’s Main Field Day. The trials look terrific and will definitely showcase the high quality trial plot management performance of the BCG research and operations teams. Field day visitors will benefit from the interesting variety of trials and speakers on offer. BCG enjoys the support of many members offering access to their farms for our trials. Thank you to long term supporters Lachlan and Andrew Barber who have provided this year’s opportunity.
Whilst the Main Field Day is a very important showcase event in the BCG calendar, there has been plenty of other activities keeping the BCG team busy. The recent Weed Smart week held in Horsham, header set up schools, precision ag sessions and weather station discussions demonstrate the range of non-trial projects BCG is involved in.
BCG was also very pleased to host US based Kevin Folta into the region. Kevin was the catalyst for some important discussions around the use of chemicals in farming, and specifically the challenge facing the ongoing availability of glyphosate. Our thanks to Marcus Oldham for the opportunity. It is important that growers are informed on these key issues and provide a voice in public discussions.
I am looking forward to next Wednesday. Apart from the learning opportunities, it’s a great chance to catch up with friends and colleagues and enjoy the social side of farming!
See you there.
John
