Recent rain across the region, around 30mm in many parts, has brought a welcome sense of relief and optimism as we move through the heart of the season. Yet farming remains, as ever, a mix of what we can plan for and what lies beyond our control. Even with this boost, some areas are still managing through patchiness or earlier dry spells. Moments like these remind us how important it is to stay connected: to each other, to new ideas, and to fresh perspectives that help us keep moving forward.
That’s part of why I’m particularly looking forward to our upcoming Chair’s Breakfast on Thursday 21 August, where we’ll be joined by keynote speaker Jim Gall, CEO of RB Sellars. Jim’s story spans family farming, building brands grounded in authenticity, and leading teams through change and growth. At the heart of his message is something every farm business can relate to: that it’s not just about what we produce, but how we share our story, align our teams, and keep momentum – even when seasons challenge us.
Jim’s philosophy on radical candour, creating cultures built on trust and honest feedback, and making the transition from working in the business to leading on the business feels especially timely. Many of us grapple with that balance – keeping our hands in the day-to-day while thinking about the bigger picture and future generations.
Events like the Chair’s Breakfast pose a chance to step back, reflect, and ask the kinds of questions that make our businesses stronger. Questions about how we lead, how we communicate, and how we keep adapting, not just to seasons, but to markets, technology and changing consumer expectations.
I’d encourage you to join us, bring a family member or colleague, and make space for these conversations. Farmers, industry members, and community members are all welcome. You can find more information and RSVP on the BCG website.
As always, thank you for your support and commitment to continuous improvement – in your paddocks, your businesses and your communities. Wishing you resilience, optimism and plenty of thoughtful questions as the season continues.
Warm regards,
John Ferrier
