Aim: To look at the performance of existing and emerging barley varieties in the Mallee. This is part of a larger trial investigating the competitiveness of barley varieties against grass weeds.

Note: the limited subset of this data is due to it being extracted from a larger trial with additional treatments included focusing on weed competition.

  • RGT Planet was the top yielding variety in this trial being 0.6 t/ha better than its nearest rival in an average to above average year.
  • Westminster and Urambie are not adapted to the region and this is reflected in the results.
  • RGT Planet, La Trobe and Spartacus CL all met malt specification but at this stage La Trobe is the only recognised malt variety, the others are undergoing accreditation.
  • The competitiveness of these varieties against weeds is being analysed and will be available in the 2017 BCG Season Research Results compendium released at the BCG Trials Review Day on Friday 16 February 2018.
