Aim:

To compare the performance of existing and emerging barley varieties in the Southern Mallee.

Location:

Warmur (main research site) 

Sowing date: 

4 May 2016 

Starting soil N (0-70cm): 

56kg N/ha 

Previous crop type: 

2015 – fallow 

Fertiliser:

4 May          50kg/ha Granulock Sup Z + Impact 

21 June       80kg/ha urea

29 August    60kg/ha urea

^ Currently undergoing malting accreditation

  • Fathom, Spartacus CL and Rosalind were the highest yielding varieties.
  • Lodging and severe head loss occurred in Compass and Scope CL due to weather damage prior to harvest. Further head loss assessments will be conducted and reported in the BCG 2016 Season Research Results compendium.
  • Due to secondary tillers, barley harvest logistics are proving challenging.
