Views

The BCG Main Field Day is on Wednesday 12 September at Narraport and promises to be as big as ever.

With a packed program featuring expert presenters, trial tours, discussion sessions and demonstrations ranging from agronomy, livestock and effective spray application, the problem will be choosing which sessions to attend.

Some of the research and agronomic topics and trials to be visited on the day are hay vs grain, early sown wheat in a late break, canola varieties, row spacing and seeding rate, automatic drafting and lentil variety tolerance.

Three growers will present in the trial tours with Robbie Lee from Birchip, and Tom Batters from St Arnaud, sharing their livestock experiences and Prairie hay producer, Russell Hocking joining the line up in the hay vs grain session.

This year, the event has an added feature of a parent’s retreat for those with small children.

The afternoon marquee discussion sessions have been selected to provide growers with practical tools and tips to not only apply to their farming businesses, but also engage in the wider topics in Australian agriculture.

Dale Grey from Agriculture Victoria will deliver his ever-popular spring weather outlook and discuss the features of the Bureau of Meteorology’s new ACCESS-S model and how the improved accuracy will support grower decision making.

Carissa Buckland, from Monsanto now owned by Bayer, will present on the global status of glyphosate, a summary of the US jury verdict and fallout, and a discussion on the science behind and regulation of glyphosate.

Kelly Angel is one of four BCG staff members presenting at the Main Field Day and she’ll highlight the value of getting the basics right on herbicide application. Ms Angel will present on maximising efficacy through water quality, droplet size, water rates, weather conditions, tank mixes and more.

Bill Gordon, Bill Gordon Consulting, rounds out the day’s formal proceedings with a session on effective spray application. From Toowomba in Queensland, Mr Gordon brings a wealth of technical and communication experience to growers from the Mallee and Wimmera and will cover topics including understanding new spray technologies, assessing spray coverage and improving efficacy.

As always, the social opportunity to catch up with growers and industry is a priority for BCG organisers therefore with the support of Furphy, attendees are invited to stay around at the conclusion of the day for refreshments.

An informative and interactive day with lots to see and do is assured.

Catering and coffee is available for purchase on site. Entry is free for Members and $50 for non-members. Parental supervision of children in the parent’s retreat is mandatory at all times.
