Harvest begins

The 2016 trials harvest is officially underway!

The BCG plot harvester struck its ‘first blow’ for the season at Curyo on November 10 with canola and barley trials the first to be harvested.

Things will ramp up from here on in with BCG responsible for harvesting more than 140 field trials at more than 40 sites across the Wimmera and Mallee, including the Mallee component of the National Variety Trials (NVTs).

A busy harvest period is expected but so far it has been a positive start with the first canola trials averaging yields of around two tonnes (2t/ha) and some of the barley yielding up to 4t/ha.

In the next few days, as the yield data is collected, the BCG lab will also get busy with grain quality analysis to begin.

The first of BCG’s independent variety trials is scheduled to be harvested next week – a canola trial at Manangatang – and as always BCG will endeavour to have yield and quality results out to members within 48 hours of harvest.

Early results allow for early decision-making, particularly around variety choice, what seed to retain and what seed to order.
