We have loved having Tia Lanyon with us this week for Year 10 work experience.

Growing up on a broadacre cropping farm north of Boort, Tia has a strong interest in agriculture, farm machinery and learning more about the industry. Currently studying at Yanco Agricultural High School, Tia spent the week getting a taste of life at BCG, from time in the office with Claudia and the extension team, to heading out in the paddock with Zoe and visiting the main trial site.

We sat down with Tia to hear more about her interest in ag, what she enjoyed about her week at BCG, and her go-to meal.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I live on a broad acre cropping farm north of Boort in Barraport where I work alongside my dad and two older sisters. I’m currently in Year 10 and I am attending school at Yanco Agricultural High School in NSW where I am a termly boarder. I enjoy working on the farm as well as learning all about it, but my favorite part would be getting to drive all different types of machinery. In my free time, I enjoy getting outside and riding my dirt bike, hanging out with my mates, and playing hockey.

What sparked your interest in agriculture?
I have grown up on our family farm my whole life, and ever since I can remember, working in the Ag industry has been something I have been very passionate about. My dad and older siblings have always been a big inspiration to me and are the reason I am so interested in agriculture. I enjoy learning about all the crops as well as getting to drive the farm machinery too.

Why did you choose to do your work experience with BCG?
I chose to do my week of work experience with BCG as I have always heard about them and I really wanted to better understand the research they are doing. This week I have spent my time in the office with Claudia, the extension team as well as out in the paddock with Zoe and also spent some time at the main trial site. I have mostly enjoyed seeing all the different work everyone does and no day is the same around here.

Yes

Death row meal?
A big medium-rare steak with chips and veggies.

Couldn’t find something to wear.

Going to rodeos with my mates.

If you could have someone’s job at BCG, whose would it be and why?
Tough question. I would want to be one of the research agronomists because they seem very interesting to me as no to day is the same and you get to do a mix of everything.
