Cameron Taylor, BCG Senior Manager of Innovation and Business Development, recently shared his experiences working at BCG and what he and his family have been up to at the family farm around Lubeck and Rupanyup.
What lead you to work at BCG?
I originally did work experience at BCG when I was in my early teens.
We marked out a simple trial site with a glass prism on top of a post and a long tape measure. This took hours and it didn’t encourage me to do trial work.
I studied agricultural science at the University of Adelaide and I thought BCG had a good fit for me to develop my agronomic knowledge with applicable uses for the family farm.
BCG also had GPS when I returned to work here full time!
What is your role at BCG?
My current role as Senior Manager of Innovation and Business Development entails a mixture of investigating new and innovative business opportunities for BCG members and farmers with commercial companies and partners.
Helping the team delivering this independent information to BCG members hopefully gives a non-biased view of more profitable and sustainable ways of farming and partnering with the commercial sector.
What do you enjoy about working at BCG?
The community and the people I work with.
The people at BCG are driven to extend national research and development to the local community that has applications all over Australia. It is rewarding to be a part of that.
What’s happening on the farm?
We have been busy planning, while also making modifications to our seeder to resolve an issue of mud build-up on the press wheels.
Unloading grain from silo bags and carting has been keeping the trucks busy, with the majority of the silo bags now empty. The silo bag is a great short-term storage option in large harvests but issues with birds and mice mean we will look to add more on farm storage into the future.
We are also in the process of gearing up to start narrow windrow burning this week, with lots to complete before sowing starts in 3 weeks.
What do you enjoy about living in the Wimmera?
Being close to the family farm and friends that I grew up with.
The family farm is also on the Wimmera river which brings plenty of activities with it.
