What is your background?
My name is Eliott and I recently completed my Year 12 studies at Birchip P-12 School. My family moved to Birchip when I was two years old. Throughout school my favourite subject were mathematics and art. I was proud to be a 2024 ABC Heywire winner which highlights the voices of young people living in rural areas.
What is your role at BCG?
I’ve joined the BCG team as a harvest casual, where I’m a part of the laboratory staff. In my role I’ll be conducting grain analysis tests, working with soil samples, and occasionally completing field work when required.
What about the role interested you in applying?
I was excited for the opportunity to gain work experience in the agricultural field, and BCG seemed like a friendly and inviting place to gain some entry level experience.
What are you looking forward to whilst working at BCG?
I’m looking forward to learning more about the more scientific side of Birchip’s agricultural industry and meeting new people through my role here. So far, I’ve enjoyed conducting grain analysis tests and understanding how crop performance is measured at the end of the year.
What are your interests outside of work?
Outside of work I am involved in many creative endeavours such as the performing arts, writing, filmmaking and mixed media. I had the opportunity this year to act in the school’s production, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, where I played the character Nick Bottom. I’ve enjoyed being artistic since I was young, and I enjoy expressing myself through a variety of creative outlets.
What’s next for you?
Next year I’m planning to move to Melbourne to study a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Teaching at Deakin University. I’ve been in Birchip my whole life and I’m excited to explore more of the world and be exposed to new opportunities and experiences!
