What is your background?

My name is Lachie and I’m from Harrow, which is south of Horsham, Victoria. I’m the third generation on our family farm and I’ve grown up with a love for the agriculture industry, I knew I would be part of agriculture from a young age.

After school I took a gap year and worked in a winery as a cellarhand, and I’ve just finished my second year of a Bachelor of Agriculture at Melbourne University.

What is your role at BCG?

I am the recipient of an AgriFutures Horizon Scholarship, and as part of the program I need to complete two-week work placements throughout my first and second years of my degree.

My role at BCG is to conduct grain analysis tests and other laboratory work, head out into the paddock with the BCG team and work with soil samples.

How did you come across a work placement position at BCG?

GRDC is the sponsor for my Horizon scholarship which led me to pursue a placement in the broadacre cropping industry. I’ve never done grain testing/analysis or worked with research trials, and I was interested in learning more about the science behind the grains industry.

What are you looking forward to throughout your time with BCG?

The intention behind completing work placements as a part of the Horizon scholarship is to gain real world experiences, and I’m excited to see and learn new things. I’m also looking forward to meeting new people and working with the BCG team.

What are your interests outside of work?

I love playing sports such as footy and cricket and I’m also an Education Officer Agricultural and Food Science Student Society. In this position I’m responsible for connecting industry to the cohort of Melbourne University students and have the opportunity to mentor younger students too. I enjoy organising networking nights and facilitating the connections between industry and education.

What’s next for you?

Now I’m in the final year of my degree I can see the light at the end of the tunnel – I plan on pursuing my interest in agronomy in whatever form that happens to take. I do know for sure that I will not be staying in Melbourne!
