We’ve seen variable weather conditions this harvest, with unseasonably cool days and intermittent rainfall slowing progress across the region. Crops haven’t matured as quickly as we might have expected, and the stop start nature of the season has meant harvest is just beginning in some areas.
As harvest slowly gains momentum, the story of the season is becoming clear: quality and yield are closely tied to spring rainfall. The contrast across the region is significant, from Ultima through to Birchip; growers are seeing different outcomes. On my farm, the results were as expected after a dry year and a dry spring.
Despite this year’s decile 1 rainfall during growing season, I’m hearing reports from Mallee growers harvesting 0.5-2 t/ha lentil crops. This is an example of the resilience and innovation of our modern farming systems. Over my years with BCG, I’ve seen the organisation play a key role in supporting these advancements. I couldn’t be prouder of the way northwest Victorian farmers continue to adapt and improve, and it’s worth reflecting, amidst the bustle of harvest, just how far farming has progressed.
As an example, farmers from the northern Mallee have been revisiting their header settings after attending a GRDC Harvester Setup clinic, hosted by MSF and supported by BCG. After ‘doing the numbers’, some have reported productivity increases of up to 30 per cent, while reducing or maintaining low harvest losses (<0.5% in cereals). They commented that they now have the flexibility to deal with varying crop yield while maintaining respectable harvest speeds, rather than driving to manage losses. It’s a great reminder how a little bit of time spent optimising the operation of our equipment can achieve great outcomes, especially when trying to get the crop off in amongst rain, excessive wind and total fire bans.
May your harvest continue safely, with some pleasant yield surprises and no header fires. I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and happy holidays.
