The Birchip Cropping Group (BCG) is 25 years old this year. The organisation formed in 1992 after a group of local farmers noticed a gap in agricultural research conducted in and contextualized for their region.
The motivation for the fledgling group was to see how grain varieties, pulse crops and agricultural products performed in local soils and conditions, and to share this information with Mallee grain growers.
More than 500 people attended the first Main Field Day, and from there, BCG has gone from strength to strength. The organisation now has 20 staff and over 400 members.
To celebrate the milestone, a 25-year cake was cut at the recent BCG Future Farmers Expo held on 5 July with BCG founding member and current board member John Ferrier and his grandson Samuel doing the honours.Â
Many people have shaped and assisted BCG to grow into the organisation it is today. We’ve developed a photo album looking back over the past 25 years to pay tribute to our supporters who have provided 25 years of dedication to broadacre agriculture and supporting regional communities.
