Meet the team: Eleanor Whittaker

What is your background?

I grew up in Guernsey, a small British island in the English Channel near the French coast. After finishing secondary school, I decided to defer my university offer to study Geography at the London School of Economics and instead take a year out to travel the world. For the first three months of my gap year, I volunteered in local Malaysian communities and trekked through the Bornean jungle. Since then, I have backpacked around Indonesia and have now come down under to Australia!

What is your role at BCG and what will you be doing?

I am undertaking a work experience placement, supporting various aspects of BCG’s operations. My role ranges from hands-on tasks, such as counting canola seeds in the lab, to assisting with the organisation of events like Trials Review Day. It’s a fantastic opportunity to gain insight into both the scientific and extension operations and programs at BCG.

What about the role interested you in applying?

I was particularly drawn to BCG’s sustainability focused approach to farming. The balance between economic viability and social and environmental responsibility really stood out to me and aligns closely with my academic interests in geography.

What are your interests outside work?

Growing up by the ocean, I naturally developed a love for the outdoors and enjoy a variety of watersports, particularly sailing in which I teach back home. I also love both playing and watching sports, including field hockey, netball, rugby, and football (or soccer!). I’m also passionate about art and music, and I love to capture people and landscapes in paintings. Above all, I love travelling, it’s a defining part of my life and what brought me to the other side of the world at 18.

What are you looking forward to whilst working at BCG?

I’m looking forward to learning more about Australian farming systems and gaining hands on experience in agricultural research. I’m also delighted to engage with the BCG community and make the most of this unique opportunity.  I’m excited for the Young Farmer Network Ball next weekend, from what I’ve heard it is going to be a great event!

Life in Birchip vs Guernsey?

Although Guernsey has always felt small to me, moving to Birchip is one of the smallest towns I’ve ever been to. While it was a bit of a shock at first, I’ve quickly grown to love the Aussie country lifestyle and its strong sense of community. Swapping a blue ocean horizon for endless fields didn’t come naturally, but I’ve come to really appreciate the contrast. I’m also loving the opportunity to be fully immersed in farming life, which is a refreshing change from the finance driven focus back home.
