Birchip Cropping Group (BCG) is seeking an experienced, energetic, outcome focused, enthusiastic & qualified Operations Manager to join us on a full-time basis, responsible for the coordination and delivery of high-quality research operations and ensuring that research equipment/facilities are effectively managed and maintained. BCG employs and develops research practitioners who are professionally curious and willing to test, challenge and explore ideas. This position offers the right candidate the opportunity to be part of a nationally recognised team that generates and delivers information to farmers to ensure long-term sustainability.

Duties & responsibilities:

  • Work with Senior Manager Research to identify strategies for BCG’s broadacre research trial management across the Victorian Wimmera/Mallee and North Central region
  • Coordinate and participate in the timely delivery of research project operations alongside research managers
  • Build strong and positive relationships with farmers and the community
  • Provide leadership in the management of the staff resource requirements
  • Prepare for and chair weekly operations meetings
  • Oversee the efficient management of BCG laboratory operations to meet data quality targets
  • Manage and oversee inventory to ensure necessary consumables are readily available
  • Lead and manage BCG technical officers and casual labour
  • In consultation with the Senior Manager Research, manage recruitment strategies for casual research staff
  • Coordinate the maintenance program of BCG research equipment, adhering to maintenance budgets
  • Implement research operations processes and procedures, including chemical regulations and WHS practices
  • Participate in WHS committee meetings

Experience & attributes:

  • Formal qualifications in agriculture and logistics is preferable
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience with agronomy or in grains research
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • An agile learner ready to find and solve complex problems
  • Proven project management skills
  • Demonstated effective communication, interpersonal & relationship management skills
  • Ability to develop ideas and see them adopted on farms
  • Willing and excited to work and live in a small rural community
  • Confident decision maker
